  A Gallery of Plants Native to Western North Carolina

 


Lavander Monarda or "Bee Balm"- Monarda fistulosa- dried leaf and flowers used as tea for colds and flu; contains thymol, an antiseptic.




Ramps - Allium tricoccum - (below) face over-collection due to increased popularity throughout southern Appalachia.




Ginseng - Panax quinquefolium - (below) is commonly poached from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park due to its international popularity.




Bloodroot - Sanguinaria canadensis - previously used in toothpaste and mouthwash to prevent dental caries; commonly used to dye white oak splits for baskets.




Morel Mushroom- Morchella esculenta - edible mushroom, highly prized by chefs.



Boneset - Eupatorium perfoliatum - whole plant (except roots) used as tea for high fevers.
